Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu - 06 and 08
涼宮ハルヒの憂鬱 - Episodes 6 and 8
These two episodes, which form Parts 1 and 2 of Remote Island Syndrome, follow the events of the SOS Brigade’s first overnight trip — a stay on a remote island organized by Koizumi.
For his efforts in planning the trip, Koizumi is arbitrarily promoted to Deputy Brigade Chief by Haruhi, who bestows upon herself another title — Great Detective. This is because she, as usual, expects the abnormal to occur and so decides that a trip to a mansion on a deserted island is the ideal setting for a mystery plot.
They set out for their trip on a large ferry, along with Kyon’s little sister, despite her unsuccessful attempt to stow away in her brother’s bag. She and Mikuru bond almost instantly. After passing the time playing cards, they arrive at their rendezvous point with the small boat that will take them to their final destination.
On the way, Haruhi interrogates the Butler and Maid (who’ve come to pick them up) about the mysteries and legends surrounding the manor and the island itself. Unfortunately for her, their are none but this doesn’t deter her — if there haven’t been any thus far, she reasons, it makes it more likely that something will happen soon.
Apart from themselves, the only other people on the island are the master and his brother, along with the two servants. For all intents and purposes, they have the run of the place. They take advantage of their surrounds by spending the day cavorting on the beach.
All goes by peacefully for their first day but on the next a typhoon rolls in. Forced to stay indoors, they while away the hours until discovering the body of the master of the house in his locked study. The murder/mystery Haruhi was looking for has arrived. Setting about solving the case, the most obvious suspect is the only member of the household that has disappeared — the younger brother of the master.
Something doesn’t seem right, however, and eventually a clever plan hatched by Kyon and Haruhi reveals the truth — it was all staged. Naturally, Haruhi takes the credit for solving the case, including a dramatic Phoenix Wright style summing up of the evidence. All’s well that ends well, and Haruhi has been kept entertained for a while, at least.
