Demashita! Power Puff Girls Z
でました!パワーパフガールズZ - Series Review
This review is based on the first 10 episodes — it will be updated in the near future to reflect on the later episodes.
We start out with, naturally enough, the formation of the group of crime fighting super-herioines known as the PowerPuff Girls. Professor Utonium and Son are tinkering with the mysterious Chemical X when an experiment goes slightly pear shaped leading to the creation of Chemical Z, which Ken then attempts to fire as a beam top destroy and iceberg.
From this, white light streaks across the sky and hits three girls who have each, separately at that same moment, stepped into the light to protect a smaller child. At the same time, a beam of black light hits a monkey at the zoo and, hey presto, Mojo Jojo is born.
The first episode starts in the middle of the story, but then takes a step back to look at the creation of the girls. Blossom is the first girl we meet and she has to fight off Mojo all by herself. We are soon introduced to Blossom — who adores her new look — and then Buttercup — who is such a tomboy that her main objection to being a super-heroine is having to wear a skirt.
The girls agree to defend Tokyo City against evil but each has a condition. Blossom can eat all the cake she wants, Blossom gets to read all the fashion magazines she wants and Buttercup can watch the sports channel as much as she wants. Tough conditions, I’m sure you’ll agree. At any rate, the deal is done and the girls are now on permanent call as the saviors of the city.
It’s essentially monster of the week stuff (sometimes two — the episodes are split into halves) with Mojo returning consistently and Fuzzy Lumpkins making a couple of appearances thus far. It’s good, simple fun, with some nice character artwork, a really nice ending song and some good voice acting.
